Home Office Bring Your Child to Work Day
May 28, 2010
Today is National Bring Your Child to Work Day so like many workers around the country, today my children and I are sharing an office space—my home office—for a few hours.
Twenty-four hours ago when my oldest son asked if they could stay home and work with me, I said no.
“What will you do all day?”
“Watch you work,” he replied.
“What can I do to make your day better?” My daughter asked (she’s racking up brownie points for future requests).
Today, full on juice, ice cream sandwiches, snacks and lunch, I ask.
“What do you think I do all day?”
“You work!” My 4 year old answers, stretching for a hug.
“You write, take conference calls…” His brother other adds.
“You blog about business,” his sister offers.
“And, you do Public Relations stuff.”
“Like what?” I ask.
“Well, what is Public Relations?”
My children are the professionals of tomorrow. They are future leaders, entrepreneurs, policy makers.
We talk about public relations as an investment a company makes in its community. We discuss programs that engage kids in education, sports, business.
“So that makes people who do that pretty special, right?” My oldest son asks.
Today I thought I would be teaching my children about work ethic, time management and balancing work and family.
Instead, I was reminded that what I do is pretty cool.
“Yes, I think you’re right.” I answer.
